Check product authenticity and seller trust

Build an evidence trail from seller identity, listing, invoice, labels, serial details and prompt testing.

There is no reliable one-step visual test that proves an ADATA product is genuine. A convincing box, printed serial number, benchmark result, or recognised device name can each be copied or manipulated. Treat authenticity as an evidence trail: the seller, listing, invoice, exact model, packaging, serial details, product behaviour, and warranty region should all make sense together.

1. Check who is selling it

On Shopee Malaysia, the clearest platform-level signal is the Shopee Mall label. Shopee says Mall products are guaranteed to be authentic and that Mall sellers are verified; its Mall policy prohibits counterfeit products.[5][6] This lowers risk, but it does not remove the need to check the actual listing, return terms, and evidence on arrival.

For a non-Mall shop, examine the seller more closely. Shopee recommends reading previous-buyer reviews and checking whether the description identifies the seller as an authorised distributor.[5] Look for a consistent business identity, a substantial sales history, recent reviews for the same product and capacity, and buyer photos that match the current listing. A high overall rating alone is weak evidence if most reviews concern unrelated low-cost items.

Do not rely on words such as “official,” “original,” “local set,” or “authorised” unless the claim is tied to a verifiable seller identity. Ask the seller who handles warranty service in Malaysia and whether the invoice will show the seller’s registered or trading name, the exact model, capacity, purchase date, and price. Save the answer in Shopee chat.

2. Match the exact product, not just the family name

Before ordering, record the complete model name, part number where shown, capacity, colour or heatsink variant, interface, and advertised warranty. Compare those details with ADATA Malaysia’s official product and support pages.[3] Counterfeit or misleading listings often mix photographs, specifications, capacities, or model generations.

Be cautious when the price is far below comparable established sellers. Shopee’s own Mall policy lists significant under-pricing among possible counterfeit indicators.[6] A discount is not proof of fraud, but an unexplained price gap deserves more checks.

3. Preserve evidence before opening or installing

Take screenshots of the listing, variation selected, seller name, Mall badge if present, warranty wording, return deadline, and seller chat. Keep the tax invoice or platform receipt. When the parcel arrives, record one continuous opening video showing the shipping label, all sides of the unopened parcel, seals, internal packaging, product label, serial number, and included accessories. Shopee says strong photo or video evidence may be required and specifically identifies internal and external packaging as useful evidence.[8]

Do not discard the box, tray, adapter, manuals, labels, or shipping materials until the return period and initial testing are complete. Shopee’s policies may require the item and included materials to be returned in the condition received, while the exact remedy is decided case by case.[7][8]

4. Inspect packaging and labels carefully

Check for inconsistent fonts, spelling errors, poor print alignment, resealing, cut labels, mismatched capacities, or a product serial that differs from the box. ADATA’s warranty-exception document warns that altered, damaged, missing, illegible, or non-matching serial numbers, barcodes, and labels can affect warranty handling.[4]

For Malaysian SD-card packaging, a missing distributor or supplier sticker is a strong warning signal for possible counterfeiting, especially where comparable legitimate local stock normally carries one. It is not definitive proof: packaging can differ by batch, channel, importer, or region. Conversely, a sticker can also be copied. Packaging alone cannot authenticate a product.

5. Check the serial and test promptly

ADATA Malaysia provides a serial-number Warranty Check page.[1] Use it to check warranty information where supported, but do not present a successful result as proof that the physical item is genuine. It is not an authenticity certificate. ADATA does not label this page as a general product-authentication tool, and a serial can potentially be copied from another unit.

After documenting the item, test it promptly using appropriate tools and a trusted device. Confirm that reported capacity and model are plausible, and perform a full-capacity write/read verification for flash storage where practical. Performance below an advertised maximum does not by itself prove counterfeiting, because host hardware, workload, temperature, free space, and test method affect results. Capacity errors, repeated data corruption, or identity inconsistencies are stronger reasons to stop using the product and preserve evidence.

6. Act before the return deadline expires

Check the live return deadline shown on the order. Shopee’s general policy requires buyers to apply before the Shopee Guarantee period expires, and applications are submitted through the mobile app.[7] Current policy lists counterfeit items among return/refund reasons, but the counterfeit-specific scope and Mall rules contain qualifications; Shopee reviews cases individually.[7][9]

If you suspect a counterfeit, do not continue destructive testing. File the correct in-app reason, upload the opening video, clear label and serial photographs, invoice, listing screenshots, seller statements, and test evidence. Also contact ADATA Malaysia through its official form for product or warranty guidance.[2] State only what the evidence shows; avoid declaring a product counterfeit solely because of packaging, one benchmark, or a failed warranty lookup.
